The winner of the 2017 Classic Revival is .. The Keyhole Rocking Chair designed by Hans J. Wegner.
The judges associated the feelings for Alpine cabins, amager shelters and American porches embodied in the design of the Keyhole Rocking Chair. Their citation read:
It is a provocative and different piece of furniture. A dark horse and joker that unanimously leaped to the top the list of entrants and into a first place in the eyes of the judging panel. The Keyhole rocking chair is a splinter in the eye, a little eccentric, but also completely unpretentious. A standard breaker that is perfect for defining a room and a piece of furniture that one has to decide on. It’s a chair that does not matter: “You must love me or not”, it says it with a glint in the eye. Not so typical Wegner then?.
“So real, so international, we can see it at the hotel SOHO Farmhouse in New York”. If you do not know the history, you could easily think it was the creation of a funky new young designer. The rocking chair is welcoming and friendly, a design based on well-being, which embodies comfort and calmness.
A few years ago, one may not have perceived it in this way. But it is time just right now with its new coluors. It’s the wildest comeback we’ve seen this year.

Hans J. Wegner’s Plank sofa by Getama was selected as part of the opening installation in London’s newly opened Design Museum.
Getama’s three seat Sofa GE290 designed by Hans J. Wegner in 1953 was selected as part one of the first temporary exhibitions titled Fear and Love – Reactions to a Complex World. The exhibition consists of 11 varied installations which allow design concepts to comment on contemporary life and politics.
The Pan-European Living Room was conceived after this year’s Brexit vote an installation by the Rotterdam architectural consultancy OMA – the Office for Metropolitan Architecture. The installation resembles a room display in a big furniture store with an item from each of the 28 EU member states. Each of the EU national flags is represented on vertical blinds at one end of the room – except post Brexit Britain’s is missing.
The museum’s director Deyan Sudjic describing the installation to the BBC said “It’s a lament for, or challenge to, the referendum result. So for instance there are four different chairs made in factories around eastern Europe and there’s even a blue glass bottle from Malta. There’s a Danish sofa and Britain is represented by some rather lurid wallpaper from Osborne & Little, the company owned by the family of the former Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne.” See Exhibition website.

More from Getama.
Getama A/S, Denmark’s oldest producer of designs by Hans J. Wegner has relaunched the designers 1967 Rocking Chair – Model GE673.
In 1967 Wegner returned to the theme of the Rocking Chair and designed a version for Getama which can be assembled and taken apart at will (GE673). The Chair was showcased at a special exhibition together with other furniture especially designed for the company.
The new collection for Getama included the Hammock Chair. Wegner had experimented with laminated wood supporting the body with a web of woven flag halyard. A technique he had previously employed in his 1958 Web Chairs, (PP129). The Hammock Chair was relaunched in 2014 by PP Møbler as PP 135. A little more than six months later, in January 1968, PP135 helped Wegner on his way to winning the American International Design Award for his collective contribution to furniture design.
